IBM is discontinuing use an analog line using modem for Remote Support Facility (RSF).
The latest mainframe z196 and above , the HMC had no longer have and option modem call home .
The modem no longer shipped . The HMC have dual ethernet port . One port will be setup as customer IP address and allowed firewall to open to IBM server for call home purpose.
Same goes to storage products , DS8K family .
The modem dial-up methods will be replaced starting with the oldest machine first. The first phase was completed in September 2016 . Total migration will be completed by Q4 , 2017 .
As a solution , IBM will assist to setup the broadband connection from HMC, TSS , and DS8000 HMC .
